One Way To Rejuvenate As A CEO: Cake Design

Sometimes you go into a CEO’s office and you see goofy items on their desk, or they have a habit of collecting seemingly strange items that make you think they’ve lost a few bolts. You might just be wrong.

Not to say that they might not have lost a nut or bolt, but a more reasonable explanation for their quirks is that they find things, stuff, a weird hobby that relax them or inspire them, or help them meditate for a few moments. In my case, that’s cake design.

It’s a big undertaking given my schedule, but I like to design and make elaborate cakes covered with fondant that I sculpt. That’s my therapy. By the time I’m done with a cake, I swear off making more, but a few months later, I’m back at it. It’s pretty much the only thing that is demanding enough that my brain won’t be able to multitask and wonder off thinking about work, strategic planning, family worries, etc…

If like me, you’ve tried the beach, the spa, the very occasional restaurant, trying to nap, reading, Sudoku, 1500-piece puzzles with no edges, etc….and nothing works, try cake design and decorating. There’s nothing like concentrating on making and painting sugar unicorns at 10 pm! In addition to braggin rights for your work, you get to impress your Franklin Covey coach. Brilliant…
